Editor’s note: Second Chance Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter is also being used for all games. The first and second rounds will be decided with a best of three series, while the championship series will be a best of five format.
Boston left Cincinnati on control of the championship series in the Second Chance Tournament after the 1946 Red Sox beat the 1970 Reds 4-1 at Riverfront Stadium.
The Red Sox hold a 2-0 advantage heading into the third contest of the best of five series at Fenway Park. Mickey Harris is scheduled to start for the Red Sox with Gary Nolan pitching for the Reds.
The affair was scoreless until the fifth, but Boston’s Rudy York changed that with a solo homer off Reds starter Wayne Simpson.
Johnny Pesky scored Boston’s next run in the sixth. After Pesky doubled to begin the frame, the Reds made two errors allowing him to cross the plate.
Red Sox starter Tex Hughson blanked the Reds until he surrendered a RBI ground out to Bobby Tolan in the eighth. He finish the game with four strikeouts, while allowing five hits.
Reds reliever Clay Carroll came on for Simpson with one out in the ninth. Carroll gave up a RBI single to Hal Wagner and a run-scoring double to Wally Moses.
