FOUNTAIN CITY, Ind. – The Northeastern girls softball team has a difficult week as the Knights open the season with three contests in three days.
“It’s front loaded,” Northeastern Head Coach Geoff Williams said of his team’s early schedule. “We’re really excited about this and it being a good gauge on where we are at.”
The Knights begin at Indianapolis Scecina on Tuesday, March 29. The Crusaders are ranked No. 8 in the pre-season Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association poll.
Next is a pair of home games on Wednesday and Thursday. Class 2A No. 6 Wapahani is first up and then Class 3A Franklin County the next day. The Wildcats received votes in the pre-season poll.
The Knights are hoping to improve upon last year’s 14-9 overall record with a 6-1 mark in the Tri-Eastern Conference
“We’re very excited,” Williams said. “We’ve got a nice class of juniors, who were our go-to girls last year.”
“We follow that up with class of three sophomores, who were starters last year,” Williams added. “For where we are at in the pre-season, we’re are far as we’ve ever been. I feel like we can compete with anybody.”
Juniors Katie Schneider, Sierra Gilmore and Carli Williams all return after making the All-TEC team last spring.
Schneider was 12-6 on the mound last season and was also a force at the plate batting .613 and knocking in 44 runs.
“She’s as good a pitcher as there is in this area and she led the state in home runs with 16, just two off the state record,” Williams said.
Gilmore hit .597 with four homers and 30 RBI. Carli Williams batted .424.
All-TEC Honorable Mention choices junior Katlyn Williams (.354, 19 RBI) and sophomore Leah Hoskins (.329, 14 RBI) also return.
The other juniors on the roster are Faith Sebert and Mikayla Hornung.
Chaise Helton and Lauren York are sophomores, while the freshmen are Lena Smith, Teona Davis, Morgan Benjamin and Kerie Brown.
Northeastern entertains defending champ Centerville in its TEC opener on Thursday, April 14.
