CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. – Chase Southerland’s 3-pointer as time expired on Thursday night gave the Lincoln boys basketball team a 53-52 Tri-Eastern Conference victory over Union County.

“I’m proud of our kids and their defensive effort,” Lincoln Head Coach Rodney Klein said of his team that evened its overall record at 8-8. The Golden Eagles are 2-3 in the TEC.

After the game was tied 15-15 at the end of the first period, Union County had a 32-22 advantage by halftime.

The Golden Eagles rallied in the third period as the closed the gap to 39-38 heading into the final stanza.

“Tonight defined our week,” Union County Head Coach Mark Detweiler said.

“We weren’t focused all week and tonight reflected that,” Detweiler added. “We didn’t deserve to win and Lincoln did.”

Southerland finished with 10 points, while Hunter Ferris led Lincoln with 17 points.

Nick Cupp added 14 points and Garrett Pumphrey contributed 10 points.

Leading the way for Union County was Logan Sanford, who tossed in 19 points.

Breyden Wicker had 12 points and Cameron Donovan had eight.

Union County won the JV game 48-38.

Lincoln returns to action Saturday afternoon at home against Class 2A No. 4 Shenandoah.

Next up for Union County (11-7, 3-2) is a non-conference affair against Randolph Southern in Liberty on Tuesday.
