HAGERSTOWN, Ind. – The Hagerstown boys basketball team moved on to the championship game of the Wayne County Tournament with a 54-44 victory over Lincoln on Friday.
The Tigers (10-1) face Northeastern (9-3) in the boys finale on Saturday.
“We looked like a team that had been in a close game,” Hagerstown coach Bobby Jones said. “Everybody stepped up a did a good job.”
The biggest step came from Jared Andis, who led the Tigers with 27 points with eight 3-pointers.
“That’s a good as I’ve seen him play when being guarded like that,” Jones said of Lincoln’s defensive effort to stop Andis.
Lincoln coach Rodney Klein was impressed.
“I thought he played one of his best games all year,” Klein said of Andis. “It always seems like every time we play them, he hits everything.”
Jones was equally impressed by Lincoln’s top scorer Chase Southerland.
“Southerland stepped up a hit some big shots,” Jones said of the Lincoln guard, who finished with 19 points.
A difference maker for the Tigers was Trey Kelley, who tossed in 14 points.
“He has the ability to do that,” Jones said. “He’s a very talented basketball player. Trey did a good job of recognizing when we weren’t able to get the ball to Jared.”
Garrett Pumphrey had 17 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks for the Golden Eagles.
“Our kids did a really good job and I though we executed real well,” Klein said. “We’ve got to do a better job of finishing things off. A couple of times when we got the lead down, then we’d miss free throws. Those a things we can work on in practice and fix.”
