CENTERVILLE, Ind. – The Hagerstown volleyball team defeated Centerville 25-15, 25-10, 25-14 in Tri-Eastern Conference action on Thursday night.
“I knew we were going to play well tonight, because we practiced horrible last night,” Hagerstown coach Brian Dale said.
Ranked No. 3 in Class 2A, the Tigers set a school record for wins a season as they went to 29-1 overall. The Tigers finished with 28 victories in the last two seasons.
“It’s not (a goal) and 29 is not what we are shooting for,” Dale said. “We’re trying to go as far as we can. They’re playing at a very high level, but we still need to improve to get to where we want to go.”
Although there were some early ties in the first two sets, the Tigers never trailed as they clinched at least part of this season’s TEC title with a 6-0 mark.
“There was a lot of great defense on both sides of the net,” Dale said. “I think our offense in the end kept taking it at them.”
Taylor Kelley led the Tigers with a dozen kills, while Amiee Hoodlebrink added eight kills and Jessica Swimm contributed seven kills.
“Taylor was lights out,” Dale said.
Beth Jenkins led the Tigers with 21 assists and Hannah Rogers finished with 13 assists.
Brytni Dale led the way with 21 digs and Victoria Pierson added 17 digs.
For Centerville (13-12, 3-2), Kelsee Troutwine topped the Bulldogs with five kills and Sidne Thompson added four kills.
“When you play against a strong team, you hope you can come out a swing hard,” Centerville coach Stephanie Hornak said. “We got some good swings in, but a lot of things didn’t click.”
Lizzy Walther led the Bulldogs with 12 assists and added six digs. Morgan Toschlog finished with 19 digs and Addie Walther had eight digs.
“We had some good serving and we had some good defense,” Hornak said. “We were digging up a lot of hits and I was really impressed with that. We were just having a hard time getting the ball put away.”
Hagerstown also won the JV contest 25-11, 25-20.
Centerville returns to action on Monday as the Bulldogs entertain Union City. The Tigers are at home on Tuesday against Knightstown.
