HAGERSTOWN, Ind. – The Hagerstown boys basketball team had four players in double figures on Friday night as the Tigers posted a 57-49 victory over Union County in Tri-Eastern Conference action.
“We have more balanced scoring tonight than what we’ve had in the first three games,” Hagerstown coach Bobby Jones said of his unbeaten Tigers.
Jared Andis led the Tigers (4-0, 1-0) with 15 points, while Evan Hoover added 14. Jalen Oliver had 11 and Isaiah Neal contributed 10.
The Tigers led 16-9 after one period and then 26-17 at halftime.
“I knew this would be a tough place to get a win,” Union County coach Mark Detweiler said. “They’re a good team and a tough match-up. We started out slow and you can’t start off slow on the road. We kind of kept getting in our own way.”
Logan Sanford was the only double digit scorer for the Patriots (2-2, 0-1) with a game-high 20 points.
“We try to guard and we try to rebound,” Jones said. “In the first category, I thought we did pretty good for most of the night.”
Hagerstown led 43-35 heading into the final stanza as the Patriots rallied.
“I thought we played back on our heels too much late in the game, but you’ve got to credit Union County,” Jones said. “They came at us hard. We coughed it up. We were just fortunate enough to get a couple of fouls called there late in the game and knock down some free throws.”
In the third period, the Tigers held a 14-point advantage. The Patriots were able to fight back when Sanford nailed a 3-pointer to close the gap to 50-46 with 2:29 left to play.
“They kicked us all over the floor,” Jones said. They beat us to every loose ball and they killed us on the boards.”
The Patriots won the rebounding battle 40-20.
“I loved our rebounding,” Detweiler said. “Our effort was really good. We saw some good things. We just have to make shots.”
Mason Miller grabbed nine rebounds, while Cameron Donovan and Sanford finished with seven each.
Union County won the JV contest 48-47 as Trevor Reiboldt hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 18 seconds left. Joey Weller led the Patriots with 15 points. Reiboldt and Ryan Hensley added 10 each.
Brady McMillan led the Tigers with 15 points. Branton Payne and Noah Dale both had 11 points.
Both teams return to action next Friday with TEC games. Hagerstown visits Centerville, while Union County entertains Winchester.
