RICHMOND, Ind. – Hagerstown led a group of three boys golf teams from the Tri-Eastern Conference that qualified for Thursday’s regional at the Player’s Club in Yorktown.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet that we are sectional champs.” Hagerstown Head Coach Billy Mullin said. “Not winning the sectional since 1969, makes it appear so out of reach. I’m very, very proud of my kids and how they have competed all year long.”
“After a good front 9, we got a little shaky on the backside, but it’s hard being the favorite and having that target on your back,” Mullin added.
The Tigers had a 335 to claim their third sectional crown with the first one coming in 1959 and the second 49 years ago.
Centerville was second, while Union County was third as both teams had 347 with the Bulldogs winning the tiebreaker.
Carson Orr of Hagerstown was the medalist with a 76 as Forest Hills Country Club.
“I’m very happy for Carson,” Mullin said. “Being medalist at the sectional is a very special accomplishment.”
“There isn’t a better sophomore in the state other than Carson Orr right now,” Mullin continued. “Caleb Cochran played tough as nails all day as he fought his putter on the back 9, but he was able to grind a very good score of 80. James Cochran was as impressive as any freshman out there today. He came through big-time for this team.”
Richmond’s Jake Miller was second with a 77.
Hagerstown’s Caleb Cochran, Centerville’s Sam Roberts and Union County’s Tyler Osborne each carded an 80 to round out the top five.
Individuals to move on without their team were Miller, Konner Frabrick of Tri High with an 85 and Dalton Lee of Connersville with an 86.
