RICHMOND, Ind. – Having three players among the top five finishers on Saturday at the Wayne County Boys Golf Tournament had Hagerstown Head Coach Billy Mullin smiling as the Tigers claimed the title for the second straight year.
“The scoring conditions got tougher as the day went on with the wind picking up and I think we got better,” Mullin said.
“That’s probably the thing I’ll remember most of this and I’m most proud of today that we did that,” he added. “When things got tougher, we got better.”
The Tigers posted a 321 on the Highland Lake Golf Course, which tied a team school mark for 18 holes that was established in 2008.
Defending Tri-Eastern Conference champion Centerville was second with a 345, while Northeastern was third at 350.
Hagerstown’s Ben Tinkle earned medalist honors for the third time in his career as he shot a 75.
“My round was pretty good,” Tinkle said. “I didn’t hit the ball the greatest, but I scored and that is what it ultimately comes down to.”
“I was pretty happy with a 75,” Tinkle added. “The wind on the back nine started blowing pretty hard. It made the course play completely different from the front side.”
Centerville’s Mason Rader was second with a 78, while Tinkle’s senior classmate Jonathan Clark carded a 79 to finish third.
“Our seniors were just really solid today,” Mullin said. “I’m really happy for both of them because they kept us going.”
Clark was pleased with his team’s results.
“I’m glad Ben showed up and played like we always expect him to,” Clark said. “I had a pretty solid round myself.”
“Our three and four, Caleb and Kyle Cochran, they showed up and posted decent scores to get the job done,” Clark continued. “I’m happy with the team.”
Northeastern’s Garrett Schuler and another Tiger, Kyle Cochran, tied for fourth as they each had an 82.
Hagerstown’s other scores were Caleb Cochran 85 and Kevin Beeson 90.
After Rader, Centerville’s scores were Skyler Benedict 84, Aaron Glover 91, Aydan Koyles 92 and Sam Roberts 100.
“I was really pleased with our overall performance,” Centerville Head Coach Roger Martin said. “We have not shot in the range of 340s. The kids came through and played well.
“Mason had a phenomenal day until right at the very end,” Martin added. “Benedict had a great day for us. He had his lowest nine hole round of the year and he had the lowest 18 hole round of his career.”
Northeastern’s other scores were Bryce Cowen 86, Taylor Appledorn 89, Ryan Wogoman 93 and Ayden Michaels 101.
Lincoln’s scores were A.J. Ogle 93, Seth Randall 99 and Brayden Miller 124.
