HAGERSTOWN, Ind. – With a pair victories on Saturday, the Hagerstown baseball team won the Wayne County Tournament at Lloyd Michael Field.
The Tigers opened the day with a 7-1 win over Northeastern before winning the title in a 10-0 decision over Centerville. The Bulldogs reached the finale with a 3-1 win over Lincoln.
“This is nice to win the county tourney, but they know what the ultimate goal is and they’re not satisfied.” Hagerstown Head Coach Brad Catey said. “We struggled a little bit the last couple of outings with three and five runs.”
“We scored a lot more and hit the baseball hard,” Catey continued. “Everybody is starting to come around.”
While Hagerstown’s offense was successful, pitcher Cody Swimm allowed two base runners in the title affair as he didn’t surrender a hit in the five-inning contest with six strikeouts.
For the Bulldogs, Oran VanSkyock walked in the second and Chris Pritchett got his free pass in the fourth.
Swimm, Mason Hicks and Drew Pyle led the Tigers with two hits apiece, while Trent Weiss smacked a solo homer in the fourth.
Pyle drove in two runs with Weiss, Swimm, Owen Golliher and Camden Rhoades each picking up a RBI.
First Round
The Tigers broke open a close game with four runs in the sixth inning against Northeastern to advance to the championship game.
Hicks, Cameron Purtha and Clay Cochran all had two hits.
Hicks homer and knocked in two with Swimm and Cochran ending with two RBI.
Brady McMillan went the distance on the mound for the Tigers as he allowed a pair of singles with six strikeouts.
Connor Bray and Quantrell Gammon had hits for the Knights. Bray also added a stolen base.
Game Two
Centerville’s Nolan Witte scattered four hits as he helped the Bulldogs to their victory over Lincoln. Witte fanned eight.
At the plate, Witte blasted a homer, while Tommy Fordonski led the Bulldogs with two hits.
Mason Dick tossed six innings for the Golden Eagles with Cameron Gwin finishing the final frame.
