LEWISVILLE, Ind. – Tri High’s girls basketball team won its third straight game on Tuesday as the Titans defeated Lincoln 48-33.
With the Tri-Eastern Conference contest tied at 29-29 late in the third period, Averi Phelps took over as she scored nine of her 14 points in less than three minutes to give the Titans the lead for good.
“Averi Phelps just established herself,” Tri High Co-Head Coach Jeff Miller said. “She was just strong.”
Phelps broke the tie as she grabbed a rebound of he own miss and was fouled as she converted on the second opportunity.
“She had a big 3-point play and then she followed it with another bucket,” Miller said. “It sort of got us going.”
After scoring six straight points, Phelps had the Titans on top 35-29.
“We were trying to defend her after she caught the ball,” Lincoln Head Coach Garry Laymon said. “She uses her body well. She was able to drop that shoulder and attack the rim.”
“We’ve got to get better at defending the post,” Laymon continued. “We tied it and had the momentum.”
Despite giving up a basket by Lincoln’s Allie Owens at the buzzer to end the third, the Titans were rolling with a 35-31 advantage.
“It seemed like it gave them confidence,” Laymon said.
Miller agreed.
“We showed a lot of energy in the last two minutes of the third and through the fourth,” he said. “Probably the best we have played all year.”
The Titans finished the night with a 13-2 final stanza.
The Golden Eagles grabbed an early 9-6 lead after the opening frame.
“We got off to a good start and then Owens hit a couple of big threes,” Miller said. “We had to adjust.”
It worked as the Titans build a 23-17 halftime lead before the Golden Eagles bounced back to eventually tie the contest at 29-29 with 1:56 left in the third on a basket by Olivia Davis.
