CHARLOTTESVILLE, Ind. – Top-ranked Northeastern won its first game after being voted No. 1 in the Class 2A poll earlier this week as the Knights defeated Eastern Hancock 79-60.

“I think this early in the season you have to handle adversity and identify what that is and be able to adapt what the other team is giving you,” Northeastern Head Coach Brent Ross said. “I thought we did that at halftime tonight and were able to just take what they gave us in the second half.”

Northeastern led 32-29 at the intermission, but the Knights widened their margin over the Royals to 54-46 after the third period.

Northeastern took command in the final quarter by outscoring Eastern Hancock 25-14.

The Knights had four players in double figures against the Royals (1-3) led by Bailey Stewart, who had 23 points. Robert Smith was next with 22 points.

Tyler Smith finished with 12 points, while DaShawn Hampton added 11 points.

Northeastern travels to Batesville on Thursday, Dec. 17.
