Everyone loves a trophy. In 1960, Topps created an All-Rookie Team and the baseball cards of outstanding young players had trophies added to their pictures.
There were a pair of National Baseball Hall of Fame Inductees on the squad 40 years ago along with several all-stars and most valuable players.
The third member of the 1975 team to be profiled in the this series is Jerry Remy.
Jerry Remy was drafted by Washington Senators in 1970, but he didn’t sign with the Senators. The next year, California picked him and he eventually made it to the big leagues with the Angels in 1975.
In his first season, Remy was the regular second baseman and batted .258 with one homer and 46 RBI. He did led the Angels with 82 runs scored and was second on the squad with 34 stolen bases.
Remy spent two more years with the Angels before he was traded to the Boston Red Sox prior to the 1978 season for pitcher Don Aase.
In 1978, Remy was an American League all-star as he hit .278 and led the Red Sox with 30 stolen bases.
Remy retired in 1984 after seven years in Boston. Since 1988, Remy has been a part of Boston’s television broadcasts and he was elected into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006.
Next up in the series: Tom Veryzer of the Detroit Tigers.
