WINCHESTER, Ind. – The Winchester track teams open the season with a trip to Tri-Eastern Conference foe Union County on Tuesday, April 5. Lincoln will also be at the event.
The boys team has 11 returnees led by Kiante Enis, who won 100-meter dash, the high jump and the discus at last year’s TEC meet.
“We expect a lot of great things this season from Kiante Enis,” said Drew Croyle, who is an assistant coach under Steve Rutledge. “Kiante is an Indiana University commit for football, a county champ, conference champ, sectional champ, and competed in the state meet last year.”
Kiante set the county meet record last year in the 100-meter dash running an electronic timed 10.53.
Senior Randy Beer is expect to contribute in the 1,600-meter run, while juniors John Thornburg and Gavin Bowling will help in the shot put along with Adam Myers in hurdles and Austin Lawrence in mid-distance events.
“We have underclassman that will be on the rise and will be competing for spots this year throughout the season,” Croyle said.
The underclassmen include Sophomore Jameson Parker and Freshman Camden Abernathy.
“I believe our team is going to be very competitive this year as we have more depth in a lot of events and a lot of returning runners,” Croyle said. “This season, we have already put in a lot of hard work and changed some things around from last year. This is what makes our coaching staff really excited to see what our boys have in store for this season.”
On the girls side, senior Sarah Mallory, junior Sierrah Love and sophomore Makenzie Smith are the returning runners.
“We expect a lot of great things this season from Sarah Mallory,” Girls Head Coach Kerry McCoy said of the senior, who will run for Indiana University-East next year. “She is very dedicated to the sport and after placing a close second last season in the conference meet.
“We also expect to see great things from Sierra Love,” McCoy continued. “She is a leader on the track and to all the upcoming hurdlers. Makenzie Smith our returning sophomore she participated in the hurdles and and 400-meter relay. She is a great asset to our team.”
The remaining members of the team are sophomore Mykah Keener, who is joined by freshmen Aaliyah Beaty, Emma Baldwin, Alexis Castillo, Sydney Conn, Brooke Covert, Sarah Graft, Sydney Myers and Kira Robinson.
“We have a larger number of runners this year and are very excited about our underclassmen,” McCoy said. “We are looking very strong gaining new athletes in almost every event including, long distance runners, sprinters, field events and also adding a new hurdler. We may not be a large team but I think this year we will be strong and ready to compete. I am very excited to continue forward with this group and see what the season has to hold for them.”
