RICHMOND, Ind. – A big first inning gave Tri all of the runs the Titans would need on Thursday afternoon as they posted a 16-2 win over Union.
The Titans sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to erase a 1-0 deficit in the opener of the Class 1A Seton Sectional at McBride Stadium.
“We have a young team and we’ve faced some adversity this year and lost some close ball games,” Tri Head Coach Carey Ellis said. “We told the kids to play as hard as we can and play the game the right way.”
Drew Mondrush went the distance in the five-inning affair allowing six hits with eight strikeouts.
“It starts with our pitching,” Ellis said. “Drew did a nice job.”
Masen Phelps led the Titans with two hits and three RBI. Mason Rottinghaus also added a pair of hits.
Eric Bilby and Josiah Jackson both knocked in two runs for the Titans.
The Titans added one run in the second and then five more in the third before finishing the contest with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Tri (6-16) advances to face Seton on Friday at 8 p.m. Seton beat Randolph Southern 15-1 on Thursday night.
“We feel like with (Jackson) on the hill, that we’ve got a good chance,” Ellis said. “We’re looking forward to the opportunity.”
