UNION CITY, Ind. – Despite some roster changes, there are expectations for the Union City girls basketball team this season.
“I lost three seniors last year and two more girls to moves,” Union City Head Coach Sarah Hines said.
Last year’s team finished 15-9 overall and with a 6-1 mark in the Tri-Eastern Conference the Indians shared the title with Hagerstown and Union County.
“We are returning six letter winners,” Hines said. “This year’s team has just two seniors in Joette Sigler and Madeline Adams, so we definitely need to fill and maintain leadership throughout the season.”
Junior Baylee Hartman was an All-TEC performer a year ago, while sophomore Justiss Cantu was All-TEC Honorable Mention. Hartman averaged 7.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game with Cantu adding 6.9 points, 5.5 assists and 3.3 steals a contest.
Junior Courtney Wise led Union City in scoring at 13.0 a game and she grabbed 5.0 rebounds a contest as well.
Adams, who played at Northeastern last year, scored 7.5 per contest and was an All-TEC Honorable Mention selection.
“At the beginning of the summer, we sat down as a team and determined our goals and expectations for the season,” Hines said. “We also constructed a list of ways we need to play in order to achieve this. The girls have been working hard in practice and focusing on those particular things in hopes of reaching those goals.”
The other juniors on the roster are Kora Kerns, Kelsey Zimmers and Breanna Partin. The sophomores are Kahlee Dowler, Aliyah Gutierrez, Ellie Kerns and Isabelle Ruiz.
“We are excited about the season and looking forward to our season and home opener on Saturday (Nov. 7) against Southern Wells,” Hines said.
Union City starts its TEC schedule with an important contest at home against Union County on Friday, Nov 27.
