Keep playing.

That’s the simple goal for the Union City girls basketball team as the Indians approach the Class 1A Tipton Regional on Saturday.

“The girls know we are not finished and we are not settling here,” Union City Head Coach Sarah Hines said. “We want to be still playing next week.”

“We have to do everything we can this week to prepare,” Hines continued. “Our girls understand what needs to be done.”

The first thing on tap for the Indians (20-5) is the opening match-up against Liberty Christian (16-10).

“We are somewhat familiar with Liberty Christian as they played in our holiday tournament in December,” Hines said. “This gave us an opportunity to watch them in person a few times.”

The Lions went 1-2 during the Union City Invitational, which the Indians won.

“We are going to continue to work on the things that we do as well and review some plays and defenses that we might need,” Hines said.

Winners of six straight, the Lions won 29-25 over Southern Wells to take their sectional title.

“Liberty Christian has improved throughout the season and they are an athletic team,” Hines said.

“We have to be prepared for them,” Hines continued. “That is what we have spent the week doing.”

Monica Watkins is the only double-figure scorer for the Lions at 12.2 points a game. She also adds 4.4 steals and 3.3 assists per contest.
