LYNN, Ind. – The Union City girls basketball team has an opportunity to win its first sectional title since 2003 after the Indians won 61-42 on Friday in the semifinals of the Class 1A event at Randolph Southern.
“I’m proud of the way the girls responded to the runs made by Seton,” Union City Head Coach Sarah Hines said. “Seton played hard and our girls kept playing and pushing through.”
The Indians (19-5) are slated to play Tri, which beat Union 46-44 in the other semifinal on Friday. Both teams are looking for their sixth overall title with Tri’s most recent coming in 2014.
During the regular season, the Indians beat Tri 54-48 in Union City on Dec. 22.
“We are thankful that we get another opportunity to play for a sectional championship,” Hines said. “We now had to play with not only our ability, but with our hearts.”
“There will be a lot of emotion and excitement and we have to stay under control and play through a lot of that,” she continued. “I hope our experience in previous games though out the season will help us in the situations we will see. We have been preparing for (Saturday) all season and this is what it’s all about.”
The Indians led at the end of every quarter against the Cardinals (9-15) as the margin grew throughout the contest.
Courtney Wise led Union City with 23 points, while two others were in double figures. Baylee Hartman added 19 points as she led the team with 11 rebounds and eight steals. Madeline Adams tossed in 13 points.
Wise also grabbed 10 rebounds and Kora Kerns handed out five assists.
