LIBERTY, Ind. – With five runs in the first inning on Wednesday, the Union County baseball team went on to post a 10-0 win over Tri.
“It was a good team effort,” Union County Head Coach Jeff Mathews said. “Everybody contributed and hit the ball hard. It’s a stepping stone. The whole idea is to get ready for the sectional.”
It was also Senior Day for the Patriots as Jamison Walters, Justin Philpot and Jarred Havens were honored prior to the Tri-Eastern Conference contest.
“They all did really well,” Mathews said. “I was really proud of them.”
Walters and Preston Scott led the Patriots with two hits each. Mook Shepler knocked in three runs.
Justin Witter, Nate Webb, Leighton Schulte and Havens had hits for Union County.
On the mound, Shepler worked the first three frames and didn’t allow a hit with six strikeouts to earn the victory.
“We limited his pitches,” Mathews said.
Scott tossed the final three innings for the Patriots.
Josiah Jackson had a double for Tri, while Drew Mondrush, Eric Bilby and Mason Rottinghaus had the other hits for the Titans.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday. Union County (13-4, 4-2) faces Western Boone in the opener of the Elwood Invitational, while Tri (3-11, 1-5) finishes conference play at home with a doubleheader against Winchester.
