LIBERTY, Ind. – Union County Head Girls Basketball Coach Scott Gray was pleased after watching his team in a scrimmage against Connersville.
“I left there thinking we are very competitive,” Gray said. “The kids did a lot of good things that we have been working on. In such a short amount of time, it’s hard to get all of your stuff in, but they responded well.”
The Patriots return All-Tri-Eastern Conference Honorable Mention performer Tara Williams, who averaged 9.0 PPG last season as a sophomore.
“We had a youth movement last year,” Gray said. “We knew we were going to take some lumps.”
Overall, the Patriots finished 8-16 a year ago, but they won seven of their last 11 contests.
“We lost a lot last year and ended up winning eight games,” Gray said. “It’s paying off because we’ve been playing the same group of kids for a couple of years.”
“We don’t have to drill on all of the basics now,” Gray continued. “We’re OK to move on and can work on some advanced stuff that is really going to help us.”
Kyla Miller and Sydney McClure are the seniors on the squad, while Fayth Hill and Rainey Shepler are returning juniors. The sophomores are Zoe Murphy, Taylor Pinkerton and Brooklyn Wilson. Genny Antrim, Madison Gray and Haylee Richards are freshmen.
“These kids compete,” Gray said. “They play so hard.”
Williams and Pinkerton both reached double digits at Connersville.
“We’ve got some play makers and we’ve actually got some size,” Gray said. “We’re looking forward to that. Right now, I’m feeling pretty good.”
The Patriots start the season at home on Friday against Milan. Union County’s TEC opener is at Northeastern on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
