LIBERTY, Ind. – In the end it was free throws that helped the Union County boys basketball team on Tuesday night.

The Patriots made some critical tosses from the free throw line as they defeated Seton 63-57 in overtime.

“It was a good situation for us to be in trying to close out a game,” Union County coach Mark Detweiler said.

The Patriots had four players in double figures with Logan Sanford leading the way with 19 points.

“I knew it was going to be tough match-up,” Detweiler said.

Cameron Donovan added 16 points and a dozen rebounds. Preston Scott tossed in 12 points, while Mason Miller finished with 10.

“We’ve got to get 30 points out of them and we had 38,” Detweiler said. “Just an important early season win.”

After trailing at the first three stops, the Cardinals were able to tie the game with 12 seconds remaining in regulation as Trent Reichley’s 3-pointer made it 54-54.

“A great effort by our kids to get back in that game in the fourth quarter,” Seton coach Josh Jurgens said. “In the second half, I thought we played really well with a lot of heart. We got better at man-to-man.”

“We’re got to learn to box out and hit free throws,” Jurgens added. “We missed seven and lost by six.”

Reichley led the Cardinals with 18 points and Billie Webster III added 17 points with a game-high 16 rebounds.

“It’s hard to play here,” Jurgens said. “I give my kids a lot of credit. They played really hard. I’m proud of them.”

The Patriots won the JV contest 57-28 with Joey Weller leading the way with 20 points. Teammate Tyler Osborne tossed in 18. The Cardinals were led by Jaden Swiderek with 16 points.

Union County (1-1) is at Knightstown on Friday, while Seton (0-2) visits Providence Cristo Rey on Saturday.
