WINCHESTER, Ind. – The Winchester football team scored 13 points in the fourth quarter on Friday as the Golden Falcons posted a come-from-behind 20-14 Homecoming victory.
Winchester quarterback Austin Lawrence hooked up with Elias Gates on a 33-yard touchdown for the winning score in the final moments of the Tri-Eastern Conference contest.
The Golden Falcons (2-2, 1-2) had tied the game at 14-14 earlier in the fourth period on a 1-yard run by Lawrence.
The Patriots (2-1, 1-1) built a 14-0 in the first half.
Union County quarterback Caleb Greene completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Hensley in the opening period.
Isaac Bentley grabbed a 9-yard scoring pass from Greene in the second quarter to extend the lead for the Patriots.
Gates scored on a 21-yard run later in the second to cut Winchester’s deficit in half at 14-7 by the intermission as the Golden Falcons started their comeback.
Gates led Winchester with 186 rushing yards on 24 carries. Lawrence was 4-of-10 for 51 yards.
Jonathan Thornburg led Winchester’s defense with 14 tackles. Tyler Edwards added 10 tackles.
Greene was 13-of-27 for 145 yards. Cameron Donovan had seven receptions for 64 yards, while Hensley had three grabs for 59 yards.
Tucker Coffman led Union County with seven tackles as Nate Webb finished with six stops.
Both teams are back in action with TEC contests next Friday as the Golden Falcons are at Lincoln, while Union County entertains Hagerstown.
